Undead Sacred Ground for Saga Age of Magic

I’ve been working on a piece of special terrain for Saga Age of Magic.
This is a free upgrade for your Warband that allows you to raise more troops whilst using the Necromancy spells. Every Warband has access to a peice of sacred ground terrain, each being catered to the Warband being used.

I picked up a selection of  gravestones through swaps on LAF & bought the crypt off eBay.
For the base I used an off cut of plastic fascia, as it is thick enough to dig out in front of some of the graves to represent where the Undead have risen from their graves.

I cut up some flat plastic bases to make some extra flagstones & made a base texture paste from white glue, one strike wall filler & various grades of sand.
Then chucked some paint at it.
Problem I’m now facing is I couldn’t be bothered to sort out the joins in the crypt! 😞
Now they’re bothering me 😂

Gripping Beast Revenants

Came across some pictures of a unit of Gripping Beast Revenants that I had painted back in April, whilst working away from home., that I’m sure I never posted.

I bought these in the Revenants Ltd Saga box set, & always really liked them, but never seemed to be able to motivate myself to paint them. So I thought with the imminent (at the time) release of age of magic I would take them away with me & start painting them.

The only problem being, was that the light was appalling in the room that I was staying in & I had only brought a small portable light with me!
So the skin tone ended up being very blue instead of grey! They were supposed to look like the Grenadier Undead Barbarian that I had previously painted!
But anyway they are done & have been killed many times in Rangers of Shadow Deep 😂

Saga Thorsday Painting Competition Eastern Princes Mounted Druzhina

Rog on the Saga Thorsday YouTube Channel recently ran a painting competition & I thought that it was as good  a reason as any to finally get on with some Rus Princes Druzhina, for a Eastern Princes Warband for Saga age of Crusades.
After a months frantic painting (& as luck had it I was working away on Guernsey for a week, so managed to paint every night for 5hrs or more)

I had intended for them to have some of the fantastic shield transfers from Little Big Men Studios but they didn't arrive in time so I had to quickly paint a shield design on them before I could take the final pictures. I now have the transfers & will be adding them later (when I can be bothered!)

There were only (if I remember correctly) 6 entries in the end & I managed to win!!
The prize was some fabulous Warhansa resin 8 Rus Warriors/Militia Miniatures & a Rus Warlord.

KIEVAN RUS PRINCES WARLORD

Ive Started mucking abut with my warlord for a new Saga Warband, Eastern Princes,
formally known as The Rus Princes

This Figure comes in a pack of 3 mounted figures labeled as Three Bogatyrs. They are based on a painting  by Viktor Vasnetsov, whom I've never heard of, but its a fabulous painting.

I bought the Miniatures from eBay & they came all the way from Russia, I don’t know who the manufacturer is though.
I just added some reins & straps to the horse as well as a rim to the helmet & replaces the spare shaft.

SAGA OBJECTIVE MARKERS

In the new Saga Book of Battles some of the scenarios require the use of upto 6 Objective markers.
These markers need to be on bases between 30 & 40 milimetres in size.
I have made 6 markers 3 on 40mm bases & 3 on 30mm bases.

The 40mm based markers are 2 standing stones,
I don't know the manufacturer though as I had them given.
The third one is from Footsore Miniatures & of a Blood Eagle Sacrifice.

The other three are various chests, the first two old citadel &
the third I can't remember as I must have had them at least 20 years.

Warriors with Dane Axe

Well I finally managed to get the unit of Warriors armed with Dane Axes Completed.
I can now use these as normal Warriors in Vikings, Heavy Weapon Armed Warriors for Jomsvikings or Norse-Gaels & finally Gall-Gaedhill (Sons of Death)

I've done weapon swaps on another
Wargames Foundry Miniature & a Gripping Beast figure (now sold separately as a champion)
The last two new figures have not had any alterations, one is an old Citadel Viking (now sold by Wargames Foundry) & as for the other figure, I've  no idea who the manufacturer is.
Turns out he is a Black Tree Designs Unarmoured Saxon.

A COUPLE MORE VIKING HEARTHGUARD

Finished up a couple more Hearthguard for my Saga Vikings..
Both miniatures are from the Saxon Miniatures range,
now owned by Warlord Games.
Ive not done any conversion work on them,
barring changing the weapon handles to make them less prone to beding or breaking.

Finally played a game of Saga 2!

Finally managed to get down to the club & played a game of Saga 2nd Edition,
this is only the second time I’ve managed to play the second edition, since it’s releas earlier this year.
Craig & I decided to play a 4pt game to help us get our heads around the changes.
The Warbands that we used were Craigs Welsh VS my Vikings, (which is nice as both Warbands have won best painted at the U.K. Grand Mellee) both of us taking
3 units of Warriors & 1 unit of Hearthguard along with the Warlords.
In the new rules if a unit isn’t within ‘L’,
or move within ‘L’ of an enemy unit they get to perform a manoeuvre (?)
which is basically a free move without having to use a Saga dice.
This means that you can get your units into position easily.
There are new cohesion rules &
all the figures in a unit now get to fight in combat
as long as you can stay within the unit cohesion rules when they charge..

All units are now exhausted on 3 fatigue, which means that you need to be more careful with the Hearthguard & Warlord.
The Warlord now has 8 attack dice & can only pass wounds to Hearthguard & he also doesn't ignore the first wound,
but can take a fatigue to cancel each wound.
If you are careful with the position of the Hearthguard, he is surprisingly survivable.

After a hard fought battle, where the Welsh didn't manage to make the Vikings into javelin filled pin cushions,
They ended up with only 2 men left, after the Viking Warlord managed to slay the Welsh chieftain.
Victory for the Vikings & free reign over the Welsh countryside.

Anglo-Dane Warlord

I decided that I would like to try having a go at Anglo-Danes for Saga.
To do this I needed a new warlord with a Dane Axe,
so I had a root through my unpainted Dark Age figures &
found a Wargames Foundry Huscarl Character figure that I could add a big axe too.
I seem to have painted the shield very 90’s GW though 😂

Vikings with Dane axe

Here's a couple of Dane Axe armed figures that i did a while ago & forgot to post.
They are both from Wargames Foundry & have had weapon swaps.

Sorry for the mis-post, I seem  to be having trouble with the Blog Pad Pro App deleting everything rather than posting it.

A couple of Rus

Finished a couple of Drabant Miniatures Rus figures to add to my Viking Warband.
I’ve swapped out the weapons on both figures.
The Drabant figures are really nice miniatures available from Old Glory UK
& definatley worth checking out.
They have Saxons, Normans, Russians, Picts & Vikings in the range.
Hopefully they will expand some of the ranges.
